EMERGENCY FIRST-AID CARD: Suspected Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar) in a Toy or Small-Breed Dog

This is general first-aid information, not a diagnosis or treatment, and not a substitute for veterinary care. If you think your small dog is having a low-blood-sugar crisis (weak, wobbly, disoriented, cold, collapsed, seizing, or unresponsive):

GO TO THE VET NOW. Head to your veterinarian or nearest emergency vet immediately. Do the sugar step below only while someone else drives, or while you grab your keys. Do not delay leaving in order to find corn syrup.

  1. On the way (or while grabbing your keys), rub a small amount of corn syrup (for example, Karo) or honey on the dog's gums. It absorbs through the gum tissue. If the dog is seizing or unconscious, do NOT put anything in its mouth. Do not pour liquid down the throat of a dog that cannot swallow safely. Get straight to the emergency vet.
  2. Go to your veterinarian or the nearest emergency vet immediately. The sugar is a temporary measure on the way to care, NOT a substitute for it.
  3. Keep the dog warm and calm during transport.

If the dog is seizing, unconscious, or not improving, treat it as an emergency now. Get to a vet or emergency vet without delay.

Why this is free. Paywalling how to recognize that a tiny dog is in trouble is prohibited. BreedFuel does not endorse "teacup" or "micro" breeding ("teacup" and "micro" are marketing terms, not an AKC-recognized breed or size class, per AKC). If you already have a very small dog, this information is here to help you care for it.
